An update from 15th June After a long 16 weeks of living with a severely broken humerus, I realised, I needed surgery as I felt so ill. Mr Cloke managed to get me in for surgery within a very short time and my family and I could not be more grateful. I had the best care I could ever have imagined. I went into Wansbeck hospital where a nurse asked how bad was the pain out of 10? I said it was 10 as my arm had not healed at all in weeks. The caring staff in ward 15 were so lovely. I went in for surgery, to have a plate fitted and artificial bone implanted, on the 2nd August. I had a full general anaesthetic and the best sleep in a long time! I came around to another lovely nurse caring for me. I immediately felt so much relief from the pain. I could not believe it. Back on the ward, a nurse asked what was my level of pain now? .... I said ....3 !! I had the surgery in the afternoon and got home the same evening....Brilliant! I was on morphine,codiene, ibuprofen and paracetamol constantly for 16 weeks. I stopped taking them within a couple of weeks of having the operation. Yes, I have a scar and a bit of surgical pain but I have more movement in my arm now than I have had in months and I feel so much better. The follow up care, back at Rake Lane has been fantastic. Thank you so much Mr Cloke, Sarah and all of your team. It is so obvious that you all have great respect for each other.

Mr Cloke and his assistant Sarah are simply outstanding. I cannot emphasise enough just how comprehensive and caring they have been throughout. Along with the nurses and other support staff, these two professionals impressively illustrate everything that is great about the NHS; why paying tax for the NHS is essential, and why NHS staff should certainly be paid more. They make me proud to be part of that important British character which, although sadly less than it used to, still puts the collective good above private profit. Thank you David, Sarah and so many others for your work, and Boris, pay they more!

David Cloke successfully operated on my shoulder a few years ago and I am now seeing him to plan thumb surgery. He is an incredibly efficient surgeon, who absolutely gives a five star service and has been very patient with this patient! Tests are arranged speedily and accurate follow up letters despatched swiftly. He certainly sets the bar very high! Thank you.

Over the past few months, I have seen Mr Cloke on a few occasions regarding a fractured elbow. On each occasion he has explained process to be undertaken, expected outcomes and any potential side effects, explained in a way that is easy to understand. The support provided has been outstanding, to the point of calling and asking to put time of appointment back 30mins as there had been a delay, others would have just let you attend at original appointment time and let you wait! It is this type of action that makes a real difference. Mr Cloke’s secretary is extremely efficient, polite, always returns calls and follows through on your requests/queries - something that is so often missing these days. Finally, you know when you are in safe hands when the nursing staff, anaesthetists (in more than 1 hospital), speak highly of your Consultant from both a medical perspective and as person. After years of looking after elderly parents and numerous encounters with several departments of NHS and Private Medical, I couldn’t recommend Mr Cloke more highly. After very little dealing with doctors for my own health, I recently broke my same arm twice in nine months. Having already had a plate fitted in my wrist and recently having a traumatic break to my humerus, I was very anxious about further surgery. Mr Cloke understood that I was in great pain but was very empathetic to the fact that I would like to try and heal naturally if possible. He will have x rays taken and review again soon. I am so pleased to have been appointed such an understanding doctor, especially during this awful pandemic, when generally, we all feel more vulnerable. Just to add, the timings of the appointments with Mr Cloke were so efficient and his nursing staff are lovely! T Ridley
